Perhatikan contoh berikut ini:

subject auxiliary verb main verb
+ I went to school.
You worked very hard.
She did not go with me.
We did not work yesterday.
? Did you go to London?
Did they work at home?

Pengecualian: Ketika Predikat suatu kalimat bukan kata kerja, maka pengganti kata kerja tersebut adalah was (I, she, he, it) dan were (we, you, they). Contoh:

You, we, they were in London.
I, he/she/it was not there.
You, we, they were not happy.
? Was I, he/she/it right?
Were you, we, they late?

Kapan kita memakai Simple Past Tense?

Kita memakai Tense ini untuk membicarakan tentang satu perbuatan yang terjadi di masa lampau.

Perhatikan contoh-contoh kalimat berikut:

  • The car exploded at 7 pm yesterday.
  • She went to the mall with my father last week.
  • Barbara was here 5 minutes ago.

B. PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE

Rumus:

+ Kata Kerja + ing

Contoh:

+ I was watching TV.
+ You were working hard.
He, she, it was not helping Mary.
We were not joking.
? Were you being silly?
? Were they playing football?

Kapan kita menggunakan Tense ini?

Tense ini menggambarkan suatu tindakan atau kejadian pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau.

Contoh:

Yesterday I watched a film on TV. The film started at 7 pm and finished at 9 pm, so …
At 8pm yesterday, I was watching TV.

C. PAST PERFECT TENSE

Rumus:

subject +

had

+ Kata Kerja Bentuk ke – 3

Contoh:

subject auxiliary verb main verb
+ I had finished my work.
+ You had stopped before me.
She had not gone to school.
We had not left.
? Had you arrived?
? Had they eaten dinner?

Kapan kita menggunakan Past Perfect Tense?

Tense ini mengekspresikan tindakan di masa lalu sebelum tindakan lain terjadi, namun kejadiannya di masa lampau.

Perhatikan:

The train had left when we arrived at 9 am. (Mungkin kereta apinya berangkat jam 8:45)

D. PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE

Rumus:

subject + had + been + Kata Kerja + ing

Contoh:

subject auxiliary verb auxiliary verb main verb
+ I had been working.
+ You had been playing tennis.
It had not been working well.
We had not been expecting her.
? Had you been drinking?
? Had they been waiting long?

Kapan Kita menggunakan Past Perfect Continuous Tense?

Tense ini sama pemakaiannya dengan Past Perfect Tense, namun mengekspresikan tindakan-tindakan yang lebih lama di masa lampau sebelum tindakan lain terjadi.

Perhatikan:

Sebuah kereta api akan berangkat jam 9. Jane mulai menunggu jam 7. Saya tiba di stasiun jam 8. Berarti…
Jane had been waiting for the train for an hour.
