Adverbs of degree

Adverbs of Degree ialah kata keterangan yang menjelaskan tentang intensitas dari suatu kegiatan yang dilakukan/terjadi.

Contoh:

  • The man drove badly. = The man drove very badly. – (Dalam kalimat ini, very menunjukkan begitu parahnya dia mengendarai mobilnya)
  • They enjoyed the film. = They enjoyed the film immensely. – (Dalam kalimat ini immensely menunjukkan begitu mereka menikmati film tersebut).

Adverbs of duration

Adverbs ini menerangkan berapa lama suatu kejadian berlangsung.

Contoh:

  • “They were occupied.” = “They were briefly occupied.”
  • “The phone was out of order.” = “The phone was temporarily out of order.”

Contoh kata-kata dalam adverbs ini adalah always, constantly, continually, frequently, infrequently, intermittently, normally, occasionally, often, periodically, rarely, regularly, seldom, sometimes, dll

Contoh:

  • I always do my homework on time.
  • She goes out occasionally.

Ketika sesuatu terjadi secara regular pada waktu tertentu yang sudah fix, kita bisa menggunakan adverbs berikut:

Contoh:

  • I get a newspaper every day. = I get the newspaper daily.
  • I pay my rent every month. = I pay my rent monthly.

Adverbs of manner

Adverbs ini menjelaskan bagaimana suatu kejadian seharusnya dilakukan. Biasanya dengan menggunakan ly.

  • Kata Sifat yang berakhiran -l tambahkan saja -ly ; contoh: careful-carefully.
  • Kata Sifat yang berakhiran g -y ubah menjadi -ily ; contoh: lucky-luckily
  • Kata Sifat yang berakhiran -ble ubah menjadi -bly ; contoh: responsible-responsibly

Contoh:

  • The little girl ran quickly
  • She sang the song beautifully.

Adverbs of place

Adverbs ini menjelaskan dimana suatu kegiatan itu terjadi. Yang termasuk dalam adverbs ini adalah abroad, anywhere, here, outside, somewhere, there, underground, upstairs, dll.

Contoh:

  • My passport is here in my bag.

Upstairs

The children were playing upstairs.

In London

The people demonstrated in London.

Outside

The children were playing outside.

Adverbs of probability

Adverbs ini menjelaskan kemungkinan akan suatu pekerjaan itu dilakukan. Yang termasuk dalam adverbs ini adalah; certainly, definitely, doubtless, maybe, perhaps, possibly, probably, dll.

Contoh:

  • We will win the game. = We will certainly win the game.

Adverbs of Superlative

Superlative digunakan untuk mengatakan bahwa sesuatu atau seseorang melakukan sesuatu pada tingkatan yang paling tinggi diantara yang lainnya yang dibandingkan olehnya. Superlative biasanya diawali oleh ‘the‘.

Contoh:-

  • “Jill did her homework most frequently.”

Peraturannya sama dengan Superlative Adjectives.

Contoh:-

  • “Jill was the fastest.”

Pengecualian berikut ini harus diperhatikan:

  • ‘well’ becomes ‘the best’
  • ‘badly’ becomes ‘the worst’
  • ‘little’ becomes ‘the least’

Contoh:

  • Jill was the best student in the class.”
  • “Jack was the worst student in the class.”
  • “To lose the most weight you need to eat the least.”

Adverbs of time

Adverbs ini menjelaskan kapan suatu kejadian itu berlangsung. Yang termasuk dalam adverbs ini adalah:afterwards, later, now, soon, yesterday, dll.

Contoh:-

  • Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away.
